When you adopt from a shelter you are rescuing a dog in need. You are getting the satisfaction of saving them from being euthanized because the shelter is full and they need to make room or living in a shelter for a long period of time. Most shelters will also spay or neuter dogs free of charge and will make sure they are vaccinated. Can you get that guarantee when you buy? Some people will tell you on Craigslist that the dogs you are buying have been vaccinated but they can't offer proof. The dogs on craigslist or from breeders have a warm comfy home, while the dogs in shelters sleep in a cage on a cold floor with barely time to run around and play and no one to give them some TLC. So if you are looking for a new dog, adopt a rescue from your Local Animal Shelter instead of buying.
